He is one of the most widely recognized and celebrated gods in Hinduism. He symbolizes many aspects of life, including wisdom and creativity. He is the remover of obstacles. There are a lot of stories throughout Asia, Africa and even Southern Europe connecting mice and elephants. It seems likely that many of these stories have common ancestors. In many variations of Ganesha’s story, a mouse or rat acts as his vehicle. Interestingly, the closest genetic relative of the elephants is a little mammal called the Hyrax, which is a small, furry, mammal almost on the scale of a rat or mouse.
